Three claim types account for the majority of viral misinformation: fabricated or misattributed quotes, manipulated data points, and doctored or out-of-context screenshots. Each can be verified in under 5 minutes with the right tools and techniques.
Quick Verification Techniques
Quotes (2 minutes): Search the claimed quote plus the speaker's name in quotes (e.g., "artificial intelligence will destroy journalism" -Elon Musk). Find the original source URL. If no primary source exists, the quote is unverified. Data points (3 minutes): Search the statistic plus the claimed source name. Find the original report or database. Verify the number appears in that source with the same methodology. Screenshots (2 minutes): Reverse image search the screenshot. Check the original account for the claimed post. For images: Google Lens or TinEye for reverse image search; InVID/WeVerify for video frames. Check metadata if the file is available (when was it actually created?).
