Junior reporters who learn journalism alongside AI tools develop a different skills profile from those who learned without them. The risk is not that they become AI-dependent โ€” it is that they never develop the core analytical skills (source evaluation, interview technique, narrative construction) that AI cannot replace. Effective junior reporter AI training integrates tools with deliberate skill-building, not instead of it.

The Two-Track Training Programme

Track 1: Core journalism skills (AI-free zones). Source cultivation, interview technique, news judgement, writing ledes, ethical decision-making โ€” all trained without AI tools to build genuine capability. Track 2: AI-assisted workflows (for efficiency). Research automation, fact-checking tools, metadata generation, draft scaffolding โ€” trained with AI tools to build efficiency habits. Require junior reporters to demonstrate competence in Track 1 tasks without AI before granting access to Track 2 tools. This sequence ensures AI augments skill rather than substituting for it.
