AI video generation (Sora, Runway Gen-3) is advancing rapidly. Newsrooms need a systematic synthetic media detection workflow — not relying on visual inspection alone.
The Detection Toolkit (2026)
Reverse image search: Google Lens and TinEye — find the earliest appearance of the image and the claimed context. AI image detectors: Hive Moderation AI Detector, Illuminarty, and AI or Not — achieve 80–90% detection accuracy for major AI generators. C2PA metadata: Images from cameras or software with Content Credentials (Adobe Firefly, Leica, Nikon) contain cryptographic provenance. Artifact analysis: FotoForensics (ELA), Ghiro — detect manipulation artifacts invisible to the human eye. Human anatomy check: AI images still frequently distort hands, teeth, ears, and background text. A systematic anatomy check catches many AI images that pass detector tools.
